Leadership Effectiveness©

Quite simply leaders are charged with the task of creating “The Organizational Compass”.  The activity is a two part function.

  • First: providing clarity of choice for a myriad of possibilities that an organization faces now and in the future given the available resources and talent.
  • Second: developing confidence in the minds of the organization’s personnel that the Goal is clear and can be accomplished.

Cicero expressed the function in an elegant manner. Suggesting proficiency as an orator is directly proportionate to one’s success at Persuasion. Is this not a Leader’s primary function? What use are the leaders’ talents, skills, collective knowledge and reputations if the personnel do not believe or refuse to comply or do not see a value added to themselves and to the firm. It is very difficult to be a leader if you do not have any followers.

Cicero identified three functions of oratory:

  1. Docere, to teach
  2. Delectare, to delight
  3. Movere, to persuade

Are the leaders applying these functions or are they confusing activity with success?

This instrument formulates in the minds of personnel and managers a clear picture of a model of expected leadership traits and behaviors. It is a teaching experience that focuses not on good or bad but on developing leadership skills.
