Employees' Perspective©

In organizations, there exists a state of tension between a desire for individuality and the organization's

need for conformity.  Most people are motivated to justify their own behavior, feelings and beliefs. This

does not result in right or wrong decisions but rather a choice of actions that will be resistant to change.

This Employees Perspectives© instrument is performed by all employees; anonymously; and anytime or

anywhere internet access is available. Doing the exercise away from the work place has a number of
advantages such as: not using employer’s work time and the responses are of a much higher value (and

more candid). The employee has the choice, at the beginning of the questionnaire, to respond in either

English or Spanish.

It is a teaching experience that focuses not on good or bad but on developing leadership skills.

To interpret the results, look first to the graph and investigate any reading above the benchmark line.

This gives a high level view of the employees' opinion in four main areas (see below)

Next “Work Environment” is further divided into areas of role clarity, communications, problem solving, etc.
Again, concern yourself with items that exceed the target.

Focused - Median Work Environment response less than target

Distracted - Median Work Environment response approaches target

Floundering - Median Work Environment response exceeds target

Finally, there are a number of questions that solicit the employees’ thoughts and suggestions about different aspects of their day-to-day work environment. Contained is a sampling of the uncensored, anonymous and insightful responses (note that the responses below are for just two of the several questions analyzed).

Given the authority to do so, how would you save this company money or reduce costs?

- Centralizing purchasing - at this time anyone can issue a purchase order, come up
with a budget and stick to it, purchases should be made based on business necessity,
- I would go out and sell and generate leads on my down time.
- Authorize spending for only the good of the company.  Too much money is used for
personal use rather than for the good of the company.
- Establish an annual budget with sales and expense projections/goals. Establish
monthly controllables budget for all expenses with process/procedures on spending
(who, when, accountablitity). Produce comprehensive weekly/quarterly/annual total
team and individual sales related reports, goals and incentives to reflect # of
inquiries, closure ratio, profit, turn around time, etc. Because we are a small
company, sales related positions are doing many non sales related activities which
could be affecting our closure ratio and solicitation efforts. Create an effective
marketing/e-commerce campaign with the help of an outside resource.
- I would reevaluate what we're spending on our IT firm in light of the results
and performance we get from them.
- I hate to say it, but some of the personal spending is killing us.  Everyone is in
"tighten-your-belt" mode these days, and the constant shopping sprees may need to
be curtailed for now.
- Utilize whatever tools available to be more efficient in our daily activities and
not fall into the "flavor of the moment" mode.
- accountability of management expenses
- manage cost of private and buisness expenses

What should we get rid of, and/or stop doing around here?

- Many responsibilites are doubled up - more than one person is given the same task.
- We need to stop that and focus on better time management
- Stop spending.
- QuickBooks 07 - we need the QB Enterprise intregation yesterday. Data is corrupted
and causes repeated and irreversable errors in in system. Existing data needs to be
cleaned up and some archiving needs to take place.
- Blatant favoritism for some over others.
- Stop spending money before we are sure we have it; stop thinking there is only one
way of doing things; get rid of the anal-retentive procedures that only make sense
to a linear thinker with blinders on.
- Setting unrealistic expectations with our customers
- trying to place blame
